Abstract

The purpose of this project is to perform a road safety audit on the intersection at the center of Lee, NH. A road safety audit is a safety performance evaluation performed on existing or proposed roads and intersections. The subject intersection connects 5 roadways in a complex triangular shaped junction, and features NH state route 155. Following many hours of observation, we concluded that the primary concerns included acute intersection angles with poor lines of sight, insufficient road signs, and a lack of pedestrian accommodations. Discussions with the NHDOT, town officials, and a publicly distributed survey confirmed that these were the safety concerns that should be addressed. The public survey helped reinforce the notion that the subject intersection is unsafe and warrants a road safety audit, after over 180 respondents provided opinion on the intersection’s safety and functionality. Although some locals did not find any issue with the intersection, about 85% of respondents stated they did not feel safe when traversing the intersection and were pleased with our support of improving the intersection. Following the problem identification phase of the project, the team used all the gathered information to begin designing alternatives to improve both the safety and functionality of the intersection. To accomplish this, the team developed a design portfolio with a range of options that vary in cost and complexity. This approach allows the town of Lee to be exposed to many options to prioritize them and perhaps implement them in the future. Proposed designs ranged from a complete roundabout retrofit, only adding directional signs, and even not adjusting the existing intersection at all. The proposed designs are presented in a portfolio with concise information for any stakeholder to easily comprehend. This project is a collaboration between the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department at the University of New Hampshire and the New Hampshire Department of Transportation.
