Impacts of the 2025 New England Drought

The 2025 New England drought is one of the largest recorded droughts that has happened in New England, causing the driest summer to have ever been recorded in New Hampshire. The purpose of this project was to find the impacts of the drought, how the conditions caused will impact regular hydrologic cycles, how the drought will affect hydropower, and what socioeconomic groups were affected the harshest. Data on the drought was gathered through research and python, and was used through Geographic Information System (GIS) and google sheets to make maps and charts, showing a visual representation of findings. The main sources of data for this project were from ISO - New England, the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Sources, and the National Centers for Environmental Information, as well as news outlets reporting on the incident throughout the summer. The main findings of this project show that the drought negatively impacts many of Northern New England's industries, like tourism and agriculture. GIS maps show exceptional drought conditions that were experienced this summer and fall, as well as the concentration of wells in New Hampshire. Charts show impacts the drought had on each state, and the impact on large and small hydroelectric facilities. Using historical data, abnormal droughts are becoming more common in New England, and these abnormal droughts can be expected to reoccur in the future because of global warming and shifting wind patterns.
