Abstract

The objective of this project is to develop a head mounting platform that measures the center of pressure. The project is sponsored by Galvion, a company that designs and manufactures protective armor and head systems. Military helmets can be equipped with various equipment such as optics, electrical components and counterweights. These attachments bring additional weight that changes the center of mass which exerts torque on the neck. The platform needs to be able to measure this change in center of mass as a location on the plate. The head model is mounted onto a 3D printed mount which connects to a VESA mount which is capable of incremental adjustment in the sagittal and frontal axes. The 3D printed mount has a set screw to tighten the head model down and allow for easily swappable of the head form model. The platform is mounted on four 20-lb s-shape load cells. The output of the load cells is amplified using HX711 load cell amplifiers which is then sent to an Arduino Uno R3 that displays the location of the center of pressure as well as the torque. The next step is to add digital inclinometers to measure the pitch and roll of the head. This project will help Galvion determine short and long term stresses on the vertebrae due to the added load of helmets and equipment mounted on the helmets.
