Abstract

The primary goal of the project was to design a safer and more accessible intersection for both vehicle traffic, and pedestrians crossing US Rt. 302 in North Conway, NH, without hindering the current flow of traffic or causing backups and/or crashes. Currently, there is a Scenic Vista on the northwest side of Route 302 that attracts tourists year-round. On the southeast side there is a hotel as well as several shops. Presently, there are no crosswalks or methods in place for pedestrians to safely cross Route 302. The volume of traffic along Route 302 is high, which is not only an issue for pedestrians crossing the road, but it also makes it difficult for cars exiting Intervale Road onto Route 302. With the guidance of the project sponsor, Jordan Pike of HEB Engineers, and the faculty advisor, Dr. Jo Sias, the project team spent the last several months analyzing the current traffic flow, researching design alternatives, and developing selected alternative designs. A design matrix was used to determine the final design alternative to be a roundabout that maximizes vehicle traffic while maintaining the smallest impact on the surrounding area. A phased construction plan was then created, and a cost analysis was performed.
