Abstract
Fixed-bottom offshore wind turbines can only be built in water depths of 0 – 60 m. However, 80% of offshore wind resources exist in waters with depths greater than 60 m, so many companies are turning towards floating wind turbines as a solution. One great challenge to this industry will be determining when to conduct maintenance and inspection on these structures. In response, this project investigated the feasibility of using acoustic emissions for the structural health monitoring of mooring chains and turbine generators of floating offshore wind turbines. This was done by comparing the acoustic emissions of unbroken and broken test cases for a model mooring chain and model turbine generator. Findings will help to direct the next steps in acoustic emission testing.
