Abstract

Over the years, Hampton, NH has been plagued with sunny day flooding - a phenomenon where the high tides cause flooding throughout the town even with seemingly perfect weather conditions. Recently, there has been a noticeable increase in sunny day flooding, both in frequency and severity. To combat this issue, we have designed a wave buoy that measures wave height, period, and frequency. The expectation is that the data collected by this device in tandem with weather conditions and flood data will present patterns to help predict sunny day flooding and help the community of Hampton better prepare for these occurrences. By collecting data on offshore wave conditions, it can establish a baseline of wave conditions for calm weather and waters and help predict the severity of flooding.
