Abstract

In Maine, adults living with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities are the only population of people receiving Home and Community Based Services (HCBS) who are allowed to be restrained as part of the Behavior Management Regulations. This capstone project focused on determining available data and research regarding restraint use and if its usage has lasting traumatic impacts. This information was used to organize self-advocates during listening sessions, to share their personal narratives to make lasting changes to the Behavior Management Regulations and eliminate the use of restraints in Maine.
