Abstract

NEMO Equipment designs and manufactures backpacking equipment to meet the needs of all types of adventures, whether that be backyard camping or high alpine mountaineering. The outdoor industry's standards for testing are based on the individual components that go into an entire tent, for example, the different fabrics and hardware. In the field, it is a combination of all the components that determine the performance. Our research aims to capture the dynamic response of the tent during the turbulent and unpredictable forces of mother nature as a whole. A perfect starting place to capture the dynamic response of the system is the pole structure. When a tent is subjected to loading scenarios like wind and snow, it is the poles that will almost always fail first. By being able to measure the forces experienced by the poles in the field NEMO would be able to improve upon the design of the tents' architecture and materials. Before a comprehensive device can be developed, the failure mode and material capabilities of current tent models must be determined in a controlled lab environment.
