Abstract

The One-Handed Bike pump was an idea brought to the Mechanical Engineering department from Professor Todd Gross. The idea for the pump is to design a device that can grasp onto both Presta and Shrader bike valves by operation of a single hand. This allows individuals with one hand to easily use bike pumps, but also allows for easier use by all. The project was designed to incorporate off-the-shelf parts with custom plastic injection molded parts for a cheap and simple manufacturing process. The design allows for fewer hand motions in the application process; we expect to be able to apply and lock the device onto the valve using one squeezing and pushing motion, in one direction.
