ET NavSwarm is a multidisciplinary team specializing in the development of a robotic rover swarm to test algorithms useful for extraterrestrial navigation; namely NASA’s Mars Exploration Program. The goal is to test a particle swarm optimization algorithm utilizing mathematical principles to find the best location of a desired objective, known as a fitness value; The current fitness value being used to evaluate this criteria is finding the highest altitude of a simulated area. The algorithm is run on a swarm of 10-20 rugged, autonomous rovers, which are known as the ET NavSwarm, to survey an area on UNH’s Boulder Field to locate this best fitness value.
