Abstract

Bioremediation is the process by which microorganisms break down or collect toxic metals and pollutants. This method can and has been used for a variety of projects such as cleaning of oil spills, water purification, and air filtration. These contribute not only to our own public safety but to the environment’s as well. Current methods are expensive and sometimes inefficient creating a need for a safe, effective, and inexpensive way to remove many different types of heavy metals. In this project, we work to genetically modify spore forming cells to express proteins that will bind to arsenic.
