Abstract

The objective of this project was to design, analyze, manufacture, and assemble reliable powertrain and suspension subsystems for the 2026 UNH Precision Racing Formula SAE vehicle. Major areas of focus included the engine mounting system, differential mounting system, drivetrain safety structures, suspension geometry, spindle assemblies, and wheel integration. The project emphasized reliability, vibration isolation, manufacturability, serviceability, and Formula SAE rule compliance while accommodating the increased power and packaging requirements associated with the integration of a multi-cylinder sportbike engine. This was achieved through the use of CAD modeling, finite element analysis (FEA), vibration analysis, motion studies, and rapid prototyping, and the final designs were developed to exceed expected competition drivetrain, braking, cornering, and impact loading conditions while improving durability, maintainability, and manufacturability compared to previous UNH Formula SAE vehicles. The project aimed to produce a durable and competition ready vehicle platform capable of supporting future developments by subsequent UNH Precision Racing teams.
