Abstract

Plane Couette flow is a foundational model that helps us understand the more complex mathematics of fluid dynamics. The Navier-Stokes equations encode the underlying physics of the motion of fluids, and they form the basis for studying phenomena ranging from aircraft aerodynamics to medical-devices. In our project, numerical solutions of these equations have been assembled into a movie where it can be seen how viscous fluids react with each other between sheering planes. By examining the velocity components and their evolution, we see how their flow develops, how different components react, and how structured patterns emerge even when the motion is in an unsteady state. Because it has simple geometry and well-defined boundaries, plane Couette flow is an ideal system for theoretical studies of the motion of fluids and the mechanisms that lead to more complex behaviors.
