Abstract
Capstone group 13 worked with the Turner Group to design a gymnasium addition and site improvements for Hampton Academy Middle School in Hampton, NH. The existing facility is undersized and outdated, contributing to circulation and safety issues. The proposed design includes an 8,320-sf column-free gymnasium with an 80-ft clear span and 20-ft interior clearance, achieved using a long-span structural steel system with open-web joists and braced frames. Structural design included load analysis, member selection, and deflection checks. A geotechnical evaluation was conducted using site boring logs to design shallow spread footings that meet bearing capacity and settlement criteria. Site improvements focus on enhancing safety and efficiency through the separation of bus and parent traffic, expanded parking, ADA-compliant access, and improved pedestrian circulation. Hydrologic analysis methods estimated a peak discharge of 26.23 cfs and a runoff volume of 108,500 cf for a 10-year storm. The final design integrates structural, geotechnical, and site considerations into a cohesive and practical solution.
