Abstract
The Trash Monster is a compact, hands-free waste management system designed to improve convenience and reduce litter in outdoor and mobile environments. Market research identified hikers, travelers, and students as users lacking hygienic, secure methods for storing small waste during activity. The design integrates a semi-rigid receptacle body, living hinge opening, and modular clip-based attachment compatible with backpacks and vehicles. Mechanical performance of PLA mounting clips was evaluated using cantilever beam theory, SolidWorks FEA, and experimental load–deflection testing, showing strong correlation and elastic-dominant response within expected loads. Fatigue life was conservatively estimated using Basquin S–N relationships, demonstrating safe operation under typical loading conditions with acceptable factors of safety and deformation limits below 0.05 in. TPU living hinge analysis indicated stresses below endurance limits, supporting repeated use. Results demonstrate a durable, hygienic, and user-friendly system with strong market potential and scalability toward injection molding and sustainable material alternatives.
