Abstract
Green International Affiliates were assigned an intersection improvement project - located in Bennington, VT. Intersection improvement alternatives were developed for the Bennington intersection at VT-RT 67A between Silk Rd/Rice Ln/and College Dr. Design alternatives including traffic signals, full-size roundabout, and peanut roundabout – were developed in the interest of improving traffic flow, safety, and pedestrian accommodation. Existing conditions and site constraints were considered in the development of AutoCAD plans for each alternative. Based on evaluation of these alternatives using a decision matrix, the peanut roundabout was selected as the preferred alternative due to its superior performance in terms of operational efficiency and safety. After selection of the preferred alternative, the design was geometrically redefined using AutoTURN. A preliminary grading plan was developed to ensure proper drainage and constructability throughout the project limits. A stormwater management system was developed in coordination with the grading plan to ensure proper drainage in the site. Utility relocation was also addressed for the proposed design. To safely and efficiently maintain traffic throughout the construction process, both a detour plan and a construction phasing plan were developed. VT Route 67A will remain open using temporary roadway alignments as a part of the two-phase construction plan. Traffic from minor approaches will be rerouted using two primary detour routes.
