Abstract

Haley & Aldrich, Inc. (H&A) was retained by a confidential client to provide a feasibility study for the remediation of a former Manufactured Gas Plant (MGP) located at a confidential site in the Great Lakes region (Site). This project analyzes data taken on the site, provided by H&A to pinpoint locations where groundwater and soil contamination exceed industrial closure levels and complete site characterization on CAD. Using the site characterization, the project team researched and compared a multitude of remedial methods based on cost effectiveness, timeliness, ecological impact, treatment capacity, and feasibility. For groundwater remediation, the team is recommending pump-and-treat with ex-situ treatment followed by a permeable reactive barrier as a secondary precaution. In addition, the team recommends surface excavation of the site followed by the placement of an impervious cap system for soil remediation. The site will be monitored following the installation of remedial options, to ensure all elements are performing to standard. The team provided a cost estimate as well as installation methods and project phasing to complete this project.
