Abstract

American Society of Civil Engineers Steel Bridge – Granite Steel Ethan Gibson, Gwendolen O'Connor, Ana Rolfe, Lily Roberts, Emily Lima   Department of Civil Engineering, University of New Hampshire, Durham, NH 03824 The objective of this project was to design, fabricate, and construct a bridge for the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) annual Steel Bridge Competition. The bridge design and construction consider the conditions of the site making a 1:10 scale model. According to the context of the problem provided by ASCE, the bridge spans a river with a sandbar island that is home to sensitive wildlife and vegetation making it critical to ensure the bridge does not touch the sandbar during construction or under the applied loads. The bridge must be able to withstand 2.5 kips of vertical loading at a point chosen day of the competition as well as 50 pounds of lateral loading. The competition is scored on time to build, bridge efficiency, deflection, as well as aesthetics. Throughout this process our model was designed in SAP2000 to measure deflection under self-weight and the various possible load cases at the competition. After the design was finalized, plans were drawn in AutoCAD and sent to a fabricator. Following fabrication of the stop stringers, diagonal bracing was added with welded connection tabs. Bolt holes were added on the tabs regarding the bearing stress calculations. Cross bracing was then added between stringers to withstand lateral loading. Finally, the team practiced building using the stringent competition regulations to avoid penalties which will add weight during load testing.
