Abstract
Our team was tasked with creating a device to help prevent hip injuries in the elderly community in the event of a fall. Hip injuries are very prominent in the elderly community, and they can become dangerous even if treated properly. Our team created a pod of padding that can be inserted into an undergarment and worn on a user's hip. Eleven different materials were thoroughly tested ranging from non-Newtonian foams to air frothed gels. Our testing setup included a realistic testing apparatus that closely simulates the motion and the impact force of a sideways fall. When the user falls, they now have a comfortable and discrete layer of protection that reduces the impact force and prevents injuries like hip fractures. The overarching goal is to deliver an affordable, comfortable, and efficient hip protection device that can be seamlessly integrated into everyday clothing, ultimately reducing fall-related injuries and improving safety in the elderly population. This project represents a big step forward in the hip protection industry, combining an evidence-based design with real world functionality to address a major health issue. Future development will focus on optimizing our design based on user feedback.
