Abstract
The Solar Decathlon is a worldwide competition that encourages teams to compete to design an efficient and effective solution to the climate crisis. The University of New Hampshire's Solar Decathlon team plans to revitalize the John H. Sununu Youth Services Center in Manchester, NH. Focusing on sustainability and community engagement, the project aims to repurpose the center into a net-zero energy educational facility. Through interdisciplinary collaboration and strict adherence to design criteria, the team seeks to create a model for a sustainable retrofit, while integrating innovative design solutions with local codes and standards. Leveraging the site's natural resources and engaging with small businesses, the project strives to minimize the environmental impact while addressing educational, poverty, and mental health concerns. By setting a precedent for future retrofits, the project demonstrates the potential of sustainable design on a much larger scale.
