Abstract

The University System of New Hampshire (USNH) myPortal (“portal”) is a virtual hub for USNH students, staff, and faculty. Originally developed by Pathify, the USNH portal displays relevant information to users like their email and list of “myCourses” in customizable widgets. Our project focuses on developing new, helpful, and fun widgets for community members to engage with. Custom widgets include student-run radio station live streams from each of the USNH institutions, a University of New Hampshire (UNH) bus schedule and live map, the UNH dining hall menus, and the UNH Athletics games schedule feed. Displaying these as widgets in one central location saves users’ time and effort from having to manually access these data sources separately to obtain the same information. Data is pulled from a variety of sources, cached, and used by widgets to display the relevant information. The widgets are developed using a combination of JavaScript, HTML, and CSS. By observing the differences in traffic volume to the myPortal before and after widget releases, we can determine the amount of value added to the original product.
