Abstract

A life cycle analysis of the global warming potential associated with space missions. Missions were broken down into three primary segments, space, launch, and ground. From these segments, a functional unit was developed to allow for normalization during data analysis. It was found that the launch segment had the largest contribution to global warming potential, followed by the space segment. Globally, space missions do not play a significant role in CO2 emissions, though it is found to be steadily increasing as reaching space becomes more attainable.
