Abstract

With the use of the breast cancer cell line SKBR3 and fibrin-based hydrogels, we found that the best way to represent cell growth in humans using a gel is by suspending the cells in a 3D matrix with a stiffness similar to that of human breast tissue. We created fibrin gels, which mainly consist of the protein fibrinogen, to produce an environment that is similar to breast tissue, both in chemical makeup and stiffness. Comparing cells in a 2D and 3D matrix, we found that 3D was a much better representation of cell growth.
