Abstract

For drivers to engage in various activities in highly automated vehicles, we must ensure they can safely switch between driving and other activities. This is a multifaceted problem that requires careful consideration of numerous factors. Most studies examining the takeover process have focused on takeover performance in terms of timing and quality of takeovers. This study focuses on different strategies drivers use while taking back control from automated driving. We conducted a driving simulator experiment to examine how different cognitive demands of texting affect drivers’ takeover strategy. We also evaluated how different takeover strategies affect takeover performance.
