Abstract

PiRail is a system for automating railroad track inspection. It records Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) data, and acoustic data in order to evaluate potential track defects. The project is marketed towards railroad hobbyists, small track inspectors, and prospective students with an interest in software development projects. The railroad industry has a long history of manual track inspection, which is both costly and timely. The implementation of this product will result in cheaper track inspection and safer tracks for staff, passengers, and cargo. Our focus this year was to graph the audio data, collected by the PiRail hardware suite riding on the track, and correlate that with the IMU graph created by last year’s PiRail team. Chart.js was used to overlay the graphs, with the shared X axis being time, and the resulting graph allows both sets of data to be visually compared. Additionally, generating points of interest from both the IMU and audio data informs the user of track areas requiring maintenance. The webpage will offer the user query parameters such as a data input (usually a .wav file), and mile start and end points. This implementation is meant to be intuitive for the user, resulting in ease of use, and high scalability.
