Abstract
This poster chronicles a Mechanical Engineering senior design team's experience competing in The United States Department of Energy National Renewable Energy Laboratory’s Solar Decathlon (U.S. DOE NREL). The team competed in the annual Design Competition, within the Residential Division, New Housing category to design a low-carbon residence. The purpose of the design challenge focuses on two critical goals; to incorporate high-performance building design strategies into curriculum, and to inspire students to pursue sustainable building careers. The competition focuses on 10 distinct challenges ranging from environmental engineering design to market viability. Each of the contests challenged student teams to design innovative high-performance, low-carbon buildings powered by renewable energy. The 2023 team successfully designed a low-carbon home and was the first University of New Hampshire team to win a finalist position. Students will carry this experience into their careers where they will apply it when designing and managing future engineering projects. This application of theory to real world challenges will aid society's transition to a sustainable energy future.
