Abstract

The ChildVoice Lukome Center in northern Uganda has been helping war-affected and highly vulnerable girls rebuild their lives since 2007. The center’s current wastewater system consists of pit latrines and Ecosan composting toilets. It is highly time consuming and laborious to maintain, generates unpleasant odors, and becomes ineffective during the monsoon season. The Lukome Center Wastewater Redesign team was tasked with designing an effective and low maintenance wastewater treatment system with low cultural or environmental impact. Based on calculations to determine the wastewater flow and various factors, the team designed a sewer pipeline and facultative lagoon wastewater treatment system to improve the quality of life and restore the dignity of the Lukome Center.
