Abstract

Nearview is a company that provides aerial drone services and solutions for gathering and mapping data on natural resources. Currently, they are collecting imagery and data on intertidal vegetation (e.g., seaweed). We developed a web application called CEMAP (Coastal Ecosystems Map Application Platform) to provide an interactive mapping interface that allows Nearview to upload and display their data for stakeholders to view. Stakeholders include a wide range of users in environmental services, from researchers to government officials. Most users will be looking for the same kind of information, such as area and biomass estimates for wild intertidal seaweeds at multiple scales. For instance, this information would be valuable to a government employee working for Environmental Services to include in annual reports to get a better sense of the environmental landscape of intertidal zones. We are utilizing AWS Amplify as a complete solution for building, shipping and hosting the application, which can be accessed via a public URL. The front-end is written in JavaScript and built using Leaflet for the web mapping and React for the user interface. Data is pulled from external data files, such as geoJSONs, to generate map layers that users can filter through. Users can also overlay infrared imagery collected by drones and satellites highlighting locations of seaweeds. CEMAP currently has the ability to display an interactive map with navigation tools and filters selecting different areas and sectors of the map. The application can be viewed by anyone with the link and an internet connection, improving the availability of Nearview’s data.
