Abstract

This project was set forward by Fuss and O’Neil to design a multipurpose rail trail bridge for the Town of Jaffrey, NH. The new bridge will replace an existing steel plate bridge that has been deemed unsafe by the town due to foundation, rusting, and freeboard issues. Three bridge alternatives and cost estimates were supplied to the town, ultimately leading to the decision to design a timber bridge on a concrete abutment with wingwalls. The girders, decking, railings, and connections were designed based on National Design Specification Manual (NDS) for Wood Construction to suffice the maximum loads provided by The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO). The foundation was designed in accordance with specifications supplied within the NHDOT Bridge Manual. The Jaffrey, NH, multipurpose rail trail bridge replacement will bring new life to outdoor travelers while focusing on the safety and well-being of all bridge crossers.
