Abstract
A core value of democracy is the creation of public policy that solves a social problem. It requires a blending of a vision, knowledge of the political system, relationship building, active participation from stakeholders and a mechanism where thoughtful debate is encouraged. Community Crossroads Policy Partners Program is “developing the next generation of leaders while partnering families and individuals so together we can craft a better future for people who experience a disability.” This leadership experience provided opportunities to explore my own values and biases as they relate to policy development, build relationships with lawmakers and critically analyze bills and new initiatives within the State of New Hampshire. There are many ways in which people can engage in the policy process. Seek to understand the past and present of developmental disability services. Bring your creativity and solutions to the table. Lead the way forward and advocate for an equitable system of services that honor choice and quality of life. Families closed the Laconia State School. We can pave the way for a new era of community living that focuses on providing supports and services for people to grow and flourish.
