Abstract
On large aircraft, winglets serve the purpose of improving fuel efficiency. This is done by increasing lift while simultaneously reducing drag. Typically, winglets are around 4% of a large aircraft’s wingspan. In addition to adding winglets, an aircraft’s wings can also be fixed at certain angles to increase lift. Due to the Reynold’s Number though, which depends on many variables, large scale aerodynamic designs cannot simply be scaled down to have the same effects for smaller applications. This project looks at how a winglet’s scale and a wing’s angle of attack affect a small-scale airfoil’s lift to drag ratio through the analysis of lift, drag, and pressure data.
