Abstract

Plasma cutting is a versatile metal cutting process that offers fast, clean, and accurate cuts compared to other processes, especially when cutting plate stock. Hypertherm is a leader in plasma cutting technologies, with their HPRXD plasma system offering many capabilities for x-y and robotic applications. Each plasma cutting torch consists of a consumable cartridge and a shield cap. Currently, these cartridges require an operator to change out by hand and come in several different amperage ratings based on material type and thickness. The purpose of this project was to create an automated system that could work in conjunction with the HPRXD system to remove and replace various cartridges without the interaction of an operator. The design consists of an pneumatic actuator which allows for seamless shield cap removal and assembly as well as a rotary storage system that can hold up to 12 cartridges at one time. The system was designed utilizing a KUKA robotic arm to control positioning of plasma torch, but can be integrated to other industrial applications as well.
