Abstract

The purpose of this research was to study the viability of the forming of circular aluminum bottles into square ones using the electromagnetic forming process, and to derive the effect of a variety of variables on the performance of the process. These variables included die construction, coil and guide construction, and material preparation via annealing. We first started by performing nanomechanical testing on the bottles to be formed using a nanomechanical tester, and concluded that annealing does not have significant effects on the mechanical properties of the material. After this, we constructed an aluminum and plastic die/coil assembly to support and position the bottles in the correct place in space for forming. Lastly, we performed initial tests on the bottles themselves, and concluded that the die assembly is functional and forms the bottles to the desired shape, but the coil guide needs to be reinforced for strength. All this said, while the first tests were not perfect, they showed promise for improvement.
