Abstract

There are many different routes and methods ships can use to navigate from point A to point B. By understanding how ships navigate, the Roads of the Sea project, sponsored by the Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping (CCOM), aims to create a web application that can aid in supporting optimal marine passage planning and navigation. This application will assist users in traversing the seas by providing port to port routes most commonly taken by ships of similar classes to their own. These features are created through the analysis and filtering of massive amounts of historical data transmissions generated from all ships travelling on the open water otherwise known as “Automatic Identification System” (AIS) data. This AIS data relays important information such as a ship’s unique identification, speeds, locations, and heading that our team used to establish which routes different ship types normally take. Using a generated ship route model from the AIS data and the application of A* search algorithm, our team was able to suggest optimal routes to users based on historical ship traffic.
