Abstract

The goal of this year’s project was to design, manufacture and fly a hybrid rocket to 10,000 feet as part of the Spaceport America Cup in June 2021. The ME team members are responsible for the development of the propulsion module, the structural frame, composite airframe, and the mechanical side of recovery/payload. The main engineering objectives include: achieve an apogee as close to 10,000 feet as possible, successful deployment and landing of a research payload, full rocket recovery by dual deployment parachute strategies, and live GPS tracking. While unforeseen circumstances influenced the work that was able to be completed and canceled the competition, significant work was performed by all 4 sub-teams. The propulsion team successfully simulated and verified various components of the combustion system with fluid analysis and thermal calculations and are actively manufacturing the chamber components. The frame team is actively manufacturing each structural component in-house including couplers and support plates as well as the aluminum internal frame. The avionics team focused on the rocket's avionics, specifically the solenoids and pressure to operate the combustion valves as well as a structurally sound way to house the avionics equipment.
