Abstract

For many first-year college students, the make or break experience is building meaningful connections. However, finding the right community isn’t always easy. Thus, in-hall event participation is crucial. Despite this, flyers are still the primary method for promoting campus activities. Since only 20% of students read flyers, they often miss opportunities to connect. HallHub is a mobile application that replaces flyers by notifying and reminding students of events where we know they’re looking - the home screen of their mobile devices. HallHub’s digital billboard and smart notification system leverage the same highly-effective techniques used by social media platforms and digital marketers. Using techniques such as content relevance, external triggers, and gamification, HallHub significantly increases event visibility while providing a convenient platform for Resident Assistants and Hall Directors to manage their halls. The HallHub team implements a design-first strategy with cutting-edge declarative frameworks such as Flutter, React, Mongo-DB, Firebase, Flask, and Heroku to reduce development time and enable a focus on adapting to customer insight. As of April 2021, 750 residents have downloaded the HallHub mobile application, and ~44% are weekly active users.
