Title:

Gender performances and other preliminary findings in partner dance classes

Video

Abstract

Two dance classes were observed and field notes were analyzed using open coding to discover preliminary themes within dance classes. This qualitative research presentation explores the theme of gender in social partner dancing. Dance classes simultaneously reinforce hetero-normative culture and challenge aspects of toxic masculinity. This presentation also explores the methodological challenges of conducting participant observation research during a pandemic, and explores the theme of nonverbal self expression.
