Abstract

The Structural Component Additive Repair Robot (S.C.A.R.R.) project aims to develop a mobile robotic system capable of performing on-site repairs to military aircraft using advanced manufacturing techniques developed by the University of New Hampshire's friction-stir research program. The system consists of a manually maneuverable cart integrated with an industrial robotic arm, designed to operate on aircraft carrriers where traditional repair methods may be inefficient or impractical. To enhance the robot’s capability and flexibility, two additional axes of motion, a vertical lead screw axis and a rotary table axis, have been incorporated. These axes enable precise positioning and orientation of the repair tool relative to complex aircraft geometries. A structural support frame was designed to withstand the mechanical loads imposed by the robotic arm, including significant bending moments during operation, while maintaining system stability and mobility. The design process involved considerations of load distribution, tipping resistance, and manufacturability to ensure safe and effective operation in real-world conditions. The resulting system provides a versatile platform for friction stir additive manufacturing (FSAM) repairs, reducing downtime and improving repair accessibility for aircraft. Overall, S.C.A.R.R. demonstrates a practical approach to integrating robotics and additive manufacturing for field-deployable aircraft repair solutions.
