Abstract
The goal of this project was to create a hyper-efficient, net-zero energy homestead. Inspired by the Bio Intelligent Quotient (BIQ) building in Hamburg, Germany, this homestead combined optimal passive house design principles with the cultivation and energy harvesting of algae to design an energy-positive homestead for the future. Additionally, this project examined the feasibility of raceway pond style algae production utilizing the Lamprey River as a natural water and nutrient source. This project required an iterative design process to achieve an optimized final design. As research revealed new information, the design for both the home and the energy barn /growing facility adapted accordingly. Location design concepts were assed in team meetings, and the team gradually honed the concept until an agreed upon design was reached.
