Abstract
This project proposes the intersection redesign of NH Route 49 and NH Route 175 in Campton, New Hampshire. The goal of this project is to improve safety, traffic flow, pedestrian accessibility, and stormwater management, while enhancing overall functionality and transforming the area into a more welcoming village center for residents and visitors. Existing conditions were evaluated using traffic counts, crash data, and field observations to develop three design alternatives. These alternatives included a compact circular roundabout, an elliptical roundabout, and the addition of a turn lane. A weighted decision matrix was then used to evaluate each alternative based on safety, cost, constructability, environmental impact, and aesthetics.
The preferred design alternative is an elliptical roundabout. This layout reduces conflict points, lowers vehicle speeds, and improves traffic flow. This design incorporates pedestrian infrastructure including refuge islands, a gravel parking lot, and drainage features to mitigate and treat runoff.
The proposed design has an estimated total cost of $2.25M based on the NHDOT weighted average unit prices and detailed quantity takeoffs. Overall, the project proposes a conceptual design that achieves the Town of Campton’s goals.
