Abstract
Gamma cyclodextrin metal-organic frameworks (CD-MOFs) are nanoporous crystal structures, which are great at capturing and storing many different chemicals. This can be used for purposes like selective adsorption, safer gas storage, water treatment, etc. There are two methods of synthesizing CD-MOFs explored in this research: fast crystallization (fast) and slow vapor diffusion (slow). Making the crystals in different ways can affect their structure on the molecular level (topology) and their overarching crystal shape (morphology). This can affect their resulting adsorption properties, which is what we aim to research.
Many techniques have been done to study the differences between these two CD-MOFs, like PXRD, SEM, and UV-Vis spectrometry. Together these tests could show whether these CD-MOFs differ in their adsorption properties, and why.
Aside from studying the properties of CD-MOFs, this research has an additional motif. These crystals are very safe, which makes them usable in more common places. We’ve been working to introduce this material in high school labs, to help students learn about crystal growth, adsorption, and material science. We ran an outreach event showcasing this idea to high school teachers, and we are working on a school adapted SOP of this experiment.
