Abstract
Pyridine-containing diketones are useful intermediates in the synthesis of organic semiconductors because the nitrogen atom in the pyridyl ring can alter electronic properties, hydrogen-bonding behavior, and coordination ability. This project focused on the synthesis, purification, and characterization of three structurally related bispyridyl diketones, with experimental work centered on the successful preparation of 1,4-di-2’-pyridinyl-1,4-butanedione. The synthetic route involved α-bromination of 2-acetylpyridine, followed by a Rongalite-mediated coupling reaction to form the target diketone. The intermediate and final product were isolated through standard workup and purification methods and were characterized by 1H NMR spectroscopy. Both compounds from Scheme 3 were obtained in relatively high purity, and the synthesis of the target diketone was shown to be scalable to multigram quantities. These results establish an effective route as a precursor to an important pyridine-based semiconductor & provide a foundation for future synthesis of the corresponding meta and para isomers, whose structural differences are expected to influence the properties of the final materials.
