Abstract

The purpose of this project is to develop standards of fluorescently tagged fatty acid lipids through HPLC analysis. Three fatty acid standards were prepared and injected into the HPLC machine to gather standard retention time data. Three organic compounds were synthesized and prepared for the collection of retention time data for future research. The results of this project are that fatty acids with longer carbon chains are less polar and experience less retention on the HPLC machine, and samples are sufficiently separated. Future applications of these findings are the use of fatty acids and organic lipid standards to characterize lipids and further related research projects.
