Abstract
This work presents the design and experimental validation of a simplified optical communication link based on intensity modulation and direct detection (IM-DD). The system consists of a function generator driving an LED, an optical fiber channel, and a photodiode receiver. A theoretical model was developed to analyze optical attenuation, LED nonlinearity, and bandwidth limitations. Experimental results show that the transmitted signal preserves its waveform while experiencing significant attenuation, with a measured transmission efficiency of approximately 2–3%, in good agreement with the simulation predictions (1–2%). These results confirm that system performance is primarily limited by coupling inefficiencies and demonstrate the validity of the proposed model.
