UWB in Tunnels

Abstract
When driving a car in a tunnel, relying on GPS for navigation is not an option, and missing an exit can cost many minutes in a big city. Our solution to this problem was to create an app that locates a car going through a tunnel, without the use of GPS signals. We used Ultra-wideband (UWB) modules as an alternative tracking system. UWB was chosen since it can provide high accuracy while remaining accessible.
We used four ESP32 DW1000 boards that were used as UWB modules, three as anchors and one as a tag on the car. The tag measures the time of flight and then calculates the distance from each anchor. This data is sent through Bluetooth serial, which is then logged in a .log file. Then for every three distances a trilateration algorithm is used to calculate the coordinates of the car
Using that data, we were able to display the location of the car on our app, and track it using the data collected by the UWB modules, to make a successful proof-of-concept model. While the model was successful, it is hard to tell how representative it is of effectiveness of a real-world implementation.
