We designed and built a theremin and a digital module that changes and enhances the instrument's sound. The theremin is an interesting electronic instrument that was invented in 1920. It is not only a musical instrument but also a learning experience that offers a window into the world of physics and electronics. When the player moves their hand or body closer to the theremin its output changes in pitch, allowing all types of melodies to be played. Theremins on the market right now are upwards of $400, so we developed a cheaper alternative. The digital module differentiates our theremin from others available. It uses a raspberry pi to change the tone of the theremin with techniques commonly employed in digital guitar pedals.
