This senior thesis focused on developing the best laboratory method for isolating charcoal in marine sediments. Soil standards were used as proxies in the methodology because of their known compositions, homogeneity, and reproducibility. Discrete 6% sulfurous acid amounts were added to soil standards to measure Total Carbon (TC), Total Inorganic Carbon (TIC), and Total Organic Carbon (TOC), using both weight percent (wt%) data and δ¹³C isotope analysis. A complementary part of the project was investigating the reactivity of charcoal using 68% Nitric Acid and 33% Peroxide treatments, applied separately and in alternating treatments. Findings from the trial runs of this project and its results will inform a future Master's thesis involving the analysis of real marine samples from the Gulf of Mexico.
