Abstract
The purpose of this project is to design a replacement bridge for Taxiway N at Manchester-Boston Regional Airport. This bridge presents unique challenges, as it serves both vehicular traffic below and aircraft taxiing to and from the runway above. Our initial research focused on Federal Aviation Administration Advisory Circulars (FAA AC), which are essential for ensuring the structure complies with regulatory standards. A site visit allows for assessing existing conditions and identifying key design challenges requiring solutions.
This report outlines how our team applied FAA guidelines to develop design options for the new bridge and identify potential improvements to its existing structure. The design process focuses on aviation traffic requirements, structural integrity, and geotechnical considerations, while also emphasizing construction phasing and safety protocols. Recognizing that airports operate on tight schedules, a construction plan will be aimed at minimizing disruption and ensuring timely, cost-effective project completion.
The strategy to minimize disruption to the project was to choose design options that would be quick to install, ensuring that we mitigate the impact on airport operations to as little as possible. In each category of our design, it will be clear that this is our focus, something that aligns with the desires of our client.
