Abstract

This project outlines the proposed expansion of the Barnstead Elementary School in Barnstead, New Hampshire, featuring a new 115-foot x 100-foot gymnasium and site improvements. The project addresses critical space constraints and traffic flow issues while meeting the needs of the school’s 500 students. The structural design incorporates a roof framing plan that consists of 24 open-web steel bar joist system of 56DLH15 Series, spanning 100 feet, supported by 14 HSS 7x7x1/2 section columns each designed for 36.8 kips. To reduce the number of columns needed for this project, a beam support system was designed to span between columns. The design utilizes a W21x83 beam, specified for the 115-foot wall, segmented into (5) 20-foot sections and (1) 15- foot section. Geotechnical analysis of the fluvial sand controlled the foundation design, resulting in the use of 4000-psi concrete. The foundation design system selected is a strap footing system, consisting of (14) 7’x7’x2’ footings, (8) 5’x5’x2’ footings, and strap beams that are 2’x2’ but vary in length. Site improvements include an expansion of faculty parking and bus loop, using permeable asphalt to reduce the runoff, along with a redesigned bus loop. Grading and drainage challenges were addressed, proposing new catch basins and a 0.5-5% slope to improve stormwater management.
