Abstract

The Shaker Boulevard Bridge Replacement Project designed a replacement bridge to go over the Knox River in Enfield, NH. The current temporary bridge has been in place for over a decade and a permanent solution is required. After conducting a site visit, an engineering study was performed. This study showed a 52 foot span was required, made from rolled steel beams and a cast in place concrete deck. There is a clay layer underground that meant a deep foundation solution was required. A row of piles at each integral abutment were chosen for a foundation to support the structure. The new design includes a two-lane road to replace the existing one-lane bridge, and traffic will be managed with a 6-mile detour during construction and a dredge and fill wetlands permit will be required. The total project is estimated to cost around $2.17 million, balancing functionality, budget, and environmental considerations.
